At one of the shows Gracie gave in Egypt this photograph above was
taken. Gracie had been told that the Generals never smiled. True, in
those days, they had little to smile about, but Gracie said, "After
watchin' me
do me stuff," they did register varying degrees of amusement. |

Gracie visited the Navy too. Here she shares her 'cuppa' with the
sailors on
H.M.S. Manchester. One of them wore her hat whilst she wore the
Commander's.

Gracie aboard another H.M. ship this time at Trincomalee, Ceylon. She then went on to visit many stations in the Pacific.

When she was in the U.S.A. in between her tours
of the war areas Gracie worked unflaggingly for her home
country. She appeared in innumerable shows to raise money for
British charities and helped in the 'Bundles for Britain'
campaign. On the left Gracie is with Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt and
Gertrude Lawrence at a Washington function which raised
thousands of dollars for the campaign.

With a crammed programme of stage, screen, radio and recording
engagements ahead, Gracie at 39 needed to keep fit. Exercises on the hearth rug helped!

Gracie enjoyed doing her own shopping. Here she is in Santa Monica, California choosing a joint for the weekend.
