Few people realised how big and sustained was Gracie's war effort.
Many of her lengthy tours of entertainment in overseas theatres of war were unpublicised - where the British boys went, Gracie followed.
She was one of the first artistes to entertain the B.E.F. troops in France

In 1941 Gracie came over from the U.S.A. to spend three months
touring camps
and factories in England. At her first camp concert in this country twin
brother privates of a Lancashire regiment presented her with the key to
their camp.
