Prologue

I was born in Exeter on the 26th August 1922 at No. 20 Weirfield Road, overlooking a river that gently flowed. A brand new girl in a brand new world, so it seemed to me the future I could not foresee. I was destined to be a dress-maker, tailor, milliner, dress designer, fashion fitter, and a workroom manageress at twenty four - obliging customers by the score. After forty years service I retired with another goal in sight a book of memoirs I would write for the pleasure of others long after I have gone - leaving much to dwell upon.

~ Retirement ~

Working days are over my heart is fancy free
I own a little cottage by the deep blue sea
Dainty muslin curtains, roses climbing 'round the door
Happiness and laughter are mine for evermore
I have a pretty garden a gay bouquet of flowers
There to provide me with many pleasant hours
The robin's song is sweeter so it seems to me
Time to reflect is sheer ecstasy
When shadows fall I take special care
To voice my delight on the wings of a prayer.
