All in Rhyme-The Life of Dame Gracie Fields

~ Gracie Fields Golden Treasury ~

Gracie sang Ave Maria, The Holy City, The Nun's Chorus and The Lord's Prayer, Sweetest Song In The World and Love Is Everywhere, Sally, Little Old Lady, South American Joe, Look Up And Laugh and Sing As We Go, The Song Of The Mountains, In The Still Of The Night, whatever she sang was a sheer delight. Switching from sentiment to humour at the drop of a hat, what other artiste could ever do that. Walter, Walter, Fred Fannakapan, The Biggest Aspidistra and I've Got A Man. Gracie gave her all she gave her very best, at the cemetery in Anacapri she was laid to rest. I cannot send letters to heaven I only wish I could, but I'm sure the nation's gratitude is fully understood.

First recorded in 1938

~ The Grateful Cabbies ~

It was a dismal night and heavy rain was  pouring down, the cabbies had no customers and bored faces wore a frown. Gracie was leaving by the stage door, their sorry plight she could ignore. "Lock your cabs and follow me", they were as thrilled as can be. She treated them to a slap-up supper at the Savoy and received bouquets of flowers to express their joy.

~ Old Friends ~

Old friends are true friends of this I am sure, they share my sorrows and so much more. Bertha Schofield and her daughter Ada, Alderman Charles Bryning and his daughter Florence. The Chief Constable S.J. Harvey and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Scott, Cousin Margaret Fielding and her husband John, Miss Mary Whipp and 'Uncle' Tom Wolfenden. So many lovely memories I recall, but friendship is the best of all.

~ The Merry Reveller ~

A merry reveller on New Year's Eve was searching for a seat on a train, he peeped in each carriage calling Happy New Year but his greeting was in vain. Nobody answered or bothered to look, they kept their heads buried in a book. Further on he received a hearty reply wishing him the same, from a lady who never shunned anyone Gracie fields was her name.

~ Family Fortunes ~

Gracie was interested in building and owned a lot of property in England, America and Capri. Apart from her stage career sister Betty was a brilliant sculptor too, it is truly amazing what the Stansfield's could do. Talented Edith was also a lady of means, but not so fond of the limelight she hid behind the scenes. Tommy opened a grocery shop in Brighton he put a manager in charge, the business prospered, profits were large. Their parents enjoyed a new lease of life, no longer an ordinary man and wife. We all have an inner spark to make us the person we wish to be, it certainly blazed in the Fields family.

~ A Lass From Lancashire ~

I became a mega-star with all the glory, wealth and fame, Gracie Fields is a household name. I haven't changed me ways I'm the same cup of tea, showing off is foreign to me. I was brought up in a warm friendly atmosphere this friendship extended wherever I appear, because I am a lass from Lancashire.
