All in Rhyme-The Life of Dame Gracie Fields

~ Why Do I Care ~

Why do I love you why do I care? Because your love for me is expressed everywhere. As long as I live so grateful I will be, when crowds stand in the pouring rain just for a glimpse of me. I am deeply moved my eyes often fill with tears, for all the adulation extended through the years.

after a show in the town, and below is the crowd she sang to

This was a familiar crowd scene when Gracie was in town.

~ The Cup That Cheers ~

Gracie's kitchen was painted yellow as bright as the sun, with an abundance of cups, mugs and pots to cater for everyone. Wine was made from her own grapes in helping themselves her guests were free, but Gracie's favourite drink was a nice cup of tea.

~ Modesty ~

If a million people said Gracie was marvellous and one criticized that is the one she would listen to, it seems unbelievable but it is quite true. If a new song went well she would say - "That is good but how can I top it." I doubt if she could Gracie was so modest as natural as can be, qualities that greatly appealed to me.

~ At Any Price ~

Gracie sang songs from Ireland, Scotland and Wales draping a scarf the appropriate way, she sang opera style, comic songs and songs bright and gay. An evening with Gracie was a marvellous treat, and no one cared how much they paid to obtain a seat.

~ Serenade ~

When you are feeling blue sing a little song or two, it's the best tonic that I know it gives the heart an inner glow. Serenading bright and gay it never fails to please, you won't be very popular if your chin touches your knees.

~ There's No Business Like Show Business ~

There was laughter unlimited in Gracie's day when she starred in the revues It's A Bargain, The Show's The Thing and Walk This Way. Mr. Tower of London, By Request and Yes I Think So, Gracie sang and danced in every show. Her sisters and brother joined the cast as soon as they left school, 'There's No Business Like Show Business' was the golden rule.

Gracie Fields as a melodiously-inclined "char" persists in singing
'Sparkling Eyes' to Archie Pitt and Tommy Fields.
It was one of the funniest incidents in
"The Show's The Thing" at the Lyceum Theatre in London.

~ All The World's A Stage ~

All the world's a stage men and women merely exists. We make our entrance and take a final bow, if we aim to give a good performance a just reward the Lord will endow. We can all be shining stars in a different way, if we do a kind deed day by day.

~ Not A Fusser ~

Many lesser artistes used to fret and fume, they complained about the lighting and the size of their dressing room. If all the lights went out Gracie would sing in the dark if the furniture was removed she would lean against a brick wall, a star of the first magnitude yet she made no fuss at all.

~ Hearts United ~

In the theatres Gracie gave her heart completely when she was on stage and the thousands who watched and listened gave theirs, seeped in the magic of her performance they soon forgot dull cares. She turned a huge theatre into a front room the gaiety was everywhere, and during the homeward journey they were walking on air.

~ All The More ~

There are times when the wealthy shun the poor, as I was once poor myself I love them all the more. Charladies before a countess, a dustman before a duke, a pauper before a prince. Whatever nationality colour or creed, we should not turn our backs on those in need.

~ If All The World Was Sorrow ~

If all the world was sorrow and sadness dwelled within, how would I change it and where would I begin? It must surely be worthwhile to lift the gloom with a smile. Then I'd teach the world to sing and find joy in everything.

~ A Tribute To Gracie Fields ~

The lights go on in Batley they have never shone so bright, bringing a warm glowing radiance to a cold northern night. There is joy in the hearts of the people they come from near and far, all to pay homage to a 'supersonic' star. Hand in hand they wander down sweet memory lane, dreaming of the next time 'Our Gracie' sings again.

~ Playtime ~

When Gracie was making films in Hollywood she engaged an American secretary whom she later invited to Capri, Neva Hecker was attractive and as capable as can be. But no one worked for Gracie in a strictly business like way, she did not believe in all work and no play.

~ One Folk ~

Of her travels around the world Gracie often spoke, she said if she ever found time to write a book she would call it 'One Folk'. Because a smile is the same in any language whatever colour or creed, for hearts to unite a smile is all we need.

~ Warm And Good ~

I did not know you as people but I began to know you as audiences that was understood your letters were comforting warm and good. Living in the mansion that I had to call home was not a welcome change all the dear familiar things were completely out of range. Home was in Rochdale round the kitchen fire with Mum and Dad working with Betty, Edie and Tommy now my sisters were married and Tommy in the theatre on his own, I in my chocolate-box I felt so alone. Without your letters loneliness would have been deeper more than I could bear all my life I've kept in touch knowing how much you care.

~ Bright And Beautiful ~

The living room was cosy with a cheerful log fire the morning table placed near a window facing the sea. Gracie and Boris were having breakfast enjoying hot buttered toast and a nice pot of tea. A lovely beginning to the next twenty four hours what did they care about wintry showers or a sudden fall of snow home was a real home at last Boris had made it so. When the sun shines again and flowers are in bloom family and friends will gather in the room. All scenes are beautiful in Capri whatever the rule of nature maybe.

~ Stars on Sunday ~

In November 1970 Gracie agreed to sing in a television series ' Stars on Sunday' produced by Jess Yates, millions of viewers looked forward to those dates. Among her songs were Three Green Bonnets, Ave Maria and How Are Things In Glocca Morra? There was no comedy numbers which she usually blended she stuck rigidly to the sacred and sentimental until the series ended.

~ Look At What You've Won ~

Gracie loved a live audience on making films she was not so keen, sometimes it would take hours just to shoot one scene. The script repeated over and over again and likewise the words of a sweet refrain. When feeling bored she had a little moan then sat in a corner on her own. Gazing at her snapshot album containing pictures of Capri that magical island by the sea. A reminder making films had earned the money to buy a villa and bask in the sun, then she said "You have no right to be fed up Grace just look at what you've won."
